Excel #Value! Problem copying info from eBay 1

I've copied some data from an eBay page and pasted to Excel (to analyize data). The dollar (bid) amount shows as $9.99 but I get the #Value! if I try to do any addition with the $9.99 number. I've tried to reformat the cells as numbers, =Value(text), copied "1" and Special Pasted/multipled the $9.99...and still end up with #Value!.
Any suggestions?

Edit/Replace - $

Get rid of the dollar sign. Excel is interpreting these values as text.
