Excel spreadsheet changes to file

This has been happening recently. Whenever people are editing Excel spreadsheets, it changes to a file format and the descriptive name becomes a series of letters and numbers.

Please advise. Thanks.
 
Sounds like the autosave version of the file is being set up. If the file has no extension and explorer identifies it as 'file' rather than Microsoft Excel Workbook, then I'd guess that's what's happening.

If you save the file in Excel and refresh the explorer view then the autosave file should disappear and the correct filename should be restored.
