I have a problem whereby I have sent one of our users an excel spreadsheet which uses MS query to extract data from a VFP database. When refreshing the data the query returns nothing. I have checked the ODBC link and it is fine and there are no parameters in the query that would stop the data from returning to excel. All other reports that this client has used before are working and there are no security issues. I'm Getting a bit flummaxed now.
Any ideas would be REALLY appreciated.

Hi,

What happend if you were to EDIT the query?

Do you get any results in the MS Query Editor?

Skip,

Thanks for responding.

No that's the weird thing. It works fine on my workstation. I can edit the query and I have no problems although when I went on their machine (online) there's nothing in the query although I can see from looking through their tables that the data is definitely there.
I even semi recreated the report online (in a new excel spreadsheet)just to see what would happen and everything seemed to be working OK.

Do they have MSQuery installed ??
Do they have permissions to the database ??
Are they entering any parameters ??

Thanks for your assistance.

They do have MS query installed and the only parameters are date parameters but that wouldn't stop the return of data as I have checked their data and there is definitely data that should get returned.
I went on their machine online and could extract data into excel so security would not be an issue would it?

Are they entering their dates correctly ??
Does their machine have different regional settings etc - this can cause SQL to misinterpret dates / times...

Thanks Geoff

Good point. I'll have to check and let you know.
Is there anything else I ought to be looking for that you can think of?

Not from what you've said - the thing that springs instantly to mind if the query is running but not returning data, is that the query is somehow being changed - hence the question about parameters - user error is the single most common cause of failing code !!

Dates are the most common cause of error as they can be reliant on regional settings within the computer, within applications and even within user's heads - their idea of how to enter a date may not be the same as yours.....

Geoff

Turns out that they had another folder with exactly the same data path as I used when I wrote the report and so the report had not been forced to link through to the correct DSN.

Thanks for your help though
much appreciated
