In a Excel company timesheet, salary employees get an "X" for daily work or a "V" for vacation. What formula can be used to convert X to equal 8 so it can be summed for weekly and bi-weekly totals?. Right now the supurvisor manually enters the total for salary employees and then has a sum formula to count the hourly employees hours.

Hi,

Insert a ROW or COLUMN, as the case may be with the formula referencing the ROW or COLUMN containing the Xs...
[tt]
=if(cellref="X",8,0)
[/tt]
Then hide that ROW or COLUMN.

You could just count how many Xs there are then multiply that by 8.

[tab]=CountIf(A2:A8,"X")*8

Thanks Skip. Worked great! I haven't had an excel class since 2000 so I am rusty.

John's solution is a good one too.
