Excel enter key won't work

My boss has opened his spreadsheet (Excel 97) and started working..when he hits the enter key it doesn't do anything...he can move around with the mouse...but the enter key is locked out...any suggestions...Thanks

What happens when the enter key is pressed - does anything at all happen? Are other keys on the keyboard working? Is the enter key working in other programs?
