This is strange - I've been using a VBA routine to import CSV data from an external instrument into Excel for a long time. Recently, the software on the instrument changed, and the CSV has an additional column. I cannot find any other changes, at least not obvious ones. But while Excel will still properly pull in and parse the old style of CSV, it plops the contents of the new style into the spreadsheet without parsing (not using VBA here, just regular File-Open menu choice). What hidden feature of the new CSV style might be tripping me up?

Hey Rob!

Is your source file, indeed, a csv? ie is the NEW software using some character OTHER THAN a comma?

Use CODE function to return the ASCII value.

Thanks Skip! I figured one of my old tek-tips mates would come through :)
Turns out the first two bytes of the new style of file were ascii 255 and 254. Very strange, but I'll work my way around it.

Good!

Haven't seen you for quite a while. Hope everything's OK.

Skip,
Yep, all is well. I transitioned to devoting my volunteer internet time to editing and community management at the Open Directory Project, which keeps me quite busy (-:
