Excel Comment Boxes are all Black!

When I move the arrow to a cell containing a comment I should be able to read the comment but it is a black box. If I try to edit the comment I can see it's contents.
This is the case for any workbook/worksheet in Excel.
IF I send it to another workstation the comments are fine.
Something needs adjusting in Excel. USING W2K Professional with Office 97.
