Excel 97 - Pivot Table Grouping

Hi -

I'm having a problem trying to group date values in a Pivot Table in Excel 97. I have one worksheet with a list of transactions from the last two years which have start dates and end dates, and I'm trying to produce 2 separate pivot tables, one which counts the number of transactions which started in each calendar month, and another to count those which ended.

When I created the first pivot table I had a list of the transactions which started on each individual day, and selecting Data / Group allows me to group by month and year: exactly the effect I wanted.

However when I tried the same procedure for transactions which have ended, selecting Data / Group seems to have no effect: the date grouping dialogue doesn't appear, and a blank line with "Group1" appears above the column labels.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there something simple and obvious I should be doing which I'm not...?

Thanks.

shebamurphy,

While I waited to see if someone could come up with a solution, I "got busy" and created a "working model" which produces the results you require.

This solution does NOT use a Pivot Table, but rather the "DCOUNT" function, one of Excel's "database functions".

If you have not yet resolved your problem, and even if you have, this "working model" will likely be useful for "enhancement" of your knowledge of Excel's database functionality.

If you email me, I'll return the file via return email.
