I have a large table of data that contains some blank cells here and there. What I would like is to set the background color/pattern conditionally for any cell that is blank but I can't seem to get that done.

I've tried setting all cells to the "greyed out" pattern and then formatting with greater than or equal to zero but that does no good.

Any suggestions?

Basically I want any cell that contains nothing to have a "greyed out" look to it. The other cells might contain text and/or numbers.

Cell Value
Equal To
=""

[tt]_____
[blue]-John[/blue][/tt]
[tab][red]The plural of anecdote is not data[/red]

I've tried the Cell value is equal to "" option and that doesn't work.

Skip: I'm using Conditional Formatting, not a function.

Notice I put " ="" "

If youjust put in "" then go back in to edit, you'll see that excel has added an equals sign and wrapped your quotes in quotes. It will look like this:
[tab]=""""
So you need to put in the equals sign yourself.

Skip's suggestion will work as well.

Formula Is
=isblank(a1)

[tt]_____
[blue]-John[/blue][/tt]
[tab][red]The plural of anecdote is not data[/red]

Thanks both of you. I used Skip's suggestion that what works just fine.
