Everytime i load up Excel it will try and install an office component with no indication what this particular component is. Then it displays an error message "compile error in hidden module:module1". It only appears when you open something that contains macros but will not appear if you open a plain worksheet. Any info/help would be great.

Look for a file name pdfmaker.xla and rename it or move it somewhere else.

If that's not the case, you probably have Norton antivirus installed, disable the iffice plug-in for Norton. More info at MS article 329820.

There may be more to the problem than is apparent since you mention that it happens only when you open files with macros in them.

Thanks for the info xlhelp!! Unfortunately those particular files were not found in the described location or anywhere on the PC. I use McAfee instead of Nortons. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling Office with no luck. If I log in from a different machine on the network there is no problem opening excel with macros, using a roaming profile. Ran virus scan and didn't pick up anything.

Try renaming the profile. Shut-down. Re-boot and try opening your file. This will remove any customization you may have and will remove your favorites for IE. You could always copy those from the renamed profile.
