Excel 2002 AutoFill only works with Alt key

One of my clients has found that using Excel Autofill to fill down a column incrementing by one for each row only works if she holds down the Alt key while doing the fill down. Otherwise it only copies the cell contents. On my PC the same feature works fine with the same spreadsheet. Any ideas as to what setting could be causing this? Thanks for any help.

The default behaviour for dragging a number cell is to repeat the same value unless you hold the Ctrl down while dragging the fill handle. You both appear to have abnormal behaviour.

Thanks for your reply. I should have made it clear that the cell in question is a combination of text and numbers like this: XX1, XX2, XX3, then the number at the end increases by one for each cell in the Autofill without holding down Ctrl.
