I am continually getting a message saying
"Not enough system resources to display fully" in Excel 2000.

I have service packed Office to SP3 and I have checked the virtual memory on the machine. It has 256MB Ram and a Swap file size of 768MB.

Any help most grateful!

Stressed,

Did you ever find a fix for this error? I have several pcs on my network that are now getting the same error in Excel.

Answer can be one of many things; needs to be narrowed down.

System resources may be low because of
*"Eye and Ear Candy" such as Active Desktop View As Web Page, sound effect schemes, animated mouse cursors and desktop icons, and fancy screen savers.
*Web browsers, as each open browser window requires additional resources.
*Multimedia applications of all types
*System monitoring utilities such as Norton SystemWorks.

It amy alos depend on the Zoom setting for your window.

Also cleanup of your computer may be required. Follow instructions on cleanup at

Good response from xlhelp.

The problem can also lie within the .xls file itself.

If you constantly update the same spreadsheet, deleting rows or cols and adding others in then the file itself can become very messy. .xls files never seem to shrink once they reach a certain size or complexity.

Also, it is not a good idea to format cells for entire columns because it does the formatting for all possible rows - not just those actually in use.

If you are getting this problem with a particular file or set of files, it may be time to create a new workbook and import into it the current data to eliminate a lot of kludge no longer being used.

Alternatively, split up the spreadsheet to overcome the error, even though it does not exceed Excel limitations on rows & cols, having a lot of text in cells for example can lead to this type of problem.

If the size of the .xls file seems much larger than it should be given the amount of data and formulas it contains that is an indication the underlying file needs to be rebuilt.
