Excel 2000 and 97 compatability during file save

I use any number of PC's throughout the company that will have XL2000 or XL97.

If I edit a spreadsheet using XL2000, from that point forward any time I am editing the same spreadsheet using XL97, I get the following "information" message:


This file was created using a later version of Microsoft Excel. If you save this file using Microsoft 97, information created with features in the later version may be lost. Do you wish to continue with the save?


Does anyone know of a method to turn this "feature" off and let me save the file using XL97 without the annoying reminder?

In Excel 2000, Tools -> Options, on the Transition tab, set the "Save Excel Files as:" version to the same version you have set in Excel 97.

That doesn't seem to work. Both PC's were originally set to default "Microsoft Excel Workbook". When I open in Excel 2000 and save as 97-2000 & 5.0/95 version, it complains a little and warns of losing certain features.

When I re-open in Excel 97, and then save, it again complains about losing features.

Any other ideas?

Go to microsoft.com and search for article Q214237. It attempts to explain what is happening, but it doesn't seem to apply exactly to your problem. Good background, though.

The only work-around I was able to find is contained in article Q213428. Not sure if this will save you much, though.

Other than that, I'm fresh out!
