I have a AMD Athlon XP 3200 yet when i turn my computer on it registers as a 1.8 - 2.5 on any given restart. What could the reason for this be? BTW i HIGHLY suggest staying away from Gigabyte and AMD combo man i have had nothing but problem..

in the begining man created code.
in the end code will create man.
clones are coming only matter of time.
examples?

This can change based on some of your BIOS settings (voltage, FSB clock, multiplier, etc.). However, I don't know why this would be so random. Does it change every reboot?

Yes every reboot. I was thinking maybe the settings on my mobo but the fact that it is always changing is what is weird. Also my mobo was running HOT then i changed the fan on my heatsink and put some artic silver 5 on and it went from 56c+ all the way down to 49c pretty constant now it is back up to 56c+ and thats with the side of my pc off.. i am deffinately thinking about investing in a new mobo.

-cry wish this stupid thing would work hehe.. i bought the mobo and processor as a combo deal off of a site.. i think it was ... guess i wont buy anything else from them..

Hola, did it come preassembled? (ie. CPU already mounted) or did you mount the CPU yourself?

this can be caused by a chipped CPU, bad or wrong BIOS, and damaged MB...

if you got warranty on it, get it replaced...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Usually this indicates the front side bus settings changing but normally this problem occurs the one time, typically the FSB resets itself to default which shows as a CPU underclock.

This can be often attributed to a failing cmos battery (litium 2032 button battery on the motherboard)

In the case of multiple changes like this, the most obvious would be a bad CPU (was it OEM) did it show any sign's of core damage or slight chipping?

But before you right off the processor I would certainly upgrade the bios to the latest.

Quite easy on a Gigabyte motherboard as the flash utility is usually built into the bios (Q flash) so all you need is the extracted bios bin. file writing to a floppy disk.

The bios is up to date. Battery is new but ill try replacing anyways. CPU was OEM and ive had my mobo and cpu for almost a year its probably out of warranty now :(. Sounds like ill have to start saving for new hardware. Thanks for all the responces!

Dig into your BIOS before you buy new hardware. You might be able to figure it out. Here's a pretty good guide to get around the BIOS. I'm not sure what make the mobo, but most mobo's have the same basic settings.

I will just add some motherboards have two methods of FSB adjustment.
1)Soft menue in the bios (200 for an XP3200)
2)Sometimes jumpers (typically 3 pairs) again to set 200.

It's always best to set by jumper if this is an option.

I would definitely check that coin battery, make sure its running around 3 volts as it should be.

Does the CPU clock show up in different increments (1.9GHz, 2.1Ghz, etc) or is it always 1.8GHz or 2.5GHz?

Definitely sounds like the FSB is changing on you. Common causes of that:

- Bad CPU mount
- Damaged CPU
- Bad stick of memory
- Motherboard or BIOS issue
