every time i put my osx panther in it dosent work

Does the disk show up on your desktop? If it does, you can run the install from there and it will automatically reboot and start up from the cd.
If that doesn't work, put in the disk and reboot holding down the c key. That will automatically boot from cd.
If neither of those work, your cd is probably damaged.
