Wondering if anyone knows and we've been working with our Vendor, Cisco TAC, and Avaya Tier III for 2 weeks now....

We are using avaya 4610 handsets connected to Cisco 3560 POE switches. System is S8300/G350 gateways - 3 VoIP modules.

When we ping (regardless of MTU size) from a connected Cisco switch OR VoIP module to any phone's IP address, every 3rd ping is "dropped":

!!.!!.!!.!!.!!.!!.!!.!!.

Avaya and our vendor claim this is a new feature of firmware 2.3 on the 4610 handsets.

We know for a fact this DID work previously using avaya 4612 handsets (1.83 firmware), S8700/G600 system, and Avaya P330 switches (no packets dropped).

With our new Cisco/Avaya setup, this ping issue occurs using either a 4610 or our old 4612 handsets, regardless of firmware level. We have tested all possible levels of firmware on both types of handset.

The confusion lies in the question - why, if this worked before, doesn't it work now?

Any help would be appreciated as we have recieved no satisfactory explanation from Avaya, our vendor, or Cisco....we're trying to get to the root cause of some dropped call issues and need to determine whether or not this is a pertinent piece of the puzzle...

schnutz122,

46xx firmware version 2.4 is already available. try it out, just to be sure.

I have noticed this also. When I ping from a switch the 3rd packet is dropped. When I ping from Windows no packets are dropped. I tried a 4610 on a powered switch and a 4620 on a non-powered switch and they behaved the same.

Agreed....could be a DoS defense mechanism, the question remains - with a 4612 phone at 1.8 firmware on an 8700 system, we never saw the behavior.

Now, with a 4612 phone at 1.8 firmware on an 8300 system, we see the behavior.

Puzzling.....

I'll give 2.4 a shot & let you know. Thanks.

I'm not seeing 2.4 firmware on the site. Do you have a link?

Try this link for release 040706.

Release 040706 includes:

SIP Release 2.2.2 for the 4602/4602SW, 4610SW, 4620SW and 4621SW IP Telephones
Release 2.3 for the 4601, 4602, 4602SW and 4620 IP Telephones
Release 2.4 for the 4610SW, 4620SW, 4621SW and 4622SW IP Telephones
Release 2.5 for the 4625SW IP Telephone
Release 2.0 for the 4690 IP Conference Set
Release 1.8.3 for the 4606/4612/4624 IP Telephones

The difference between Release 040706 and Release 022006 is the addition of Release 2.4 for the 4610SW, 4620SW, 4621SW and 4622SW Telephones.

Well....ping issue still persists. Avaya tier III doesn't give a straight answer on this, nor does Cisco. I know that Cisco phones have this built in as a DoS prevention feature. Anyone have any documentation indicating whether this should be happening with a converged Avaya/Cisco solution?
