My Norton Internet Security popped up a message that "xmmtnl.exe" was attempting to access the internet. I ran three different spyware detectors, it wasn't flagged as bad. It resides in my Windows System32 directory. Is this a normal Windows file or something else?

I have not seen this file before and I cannot find out any information about this file either. However the fact that it is trying to access the Internet is not a good sign.

Try renaming the file to xmmtnl.old then restart your machine.

Do you get any errors? Does it recreate itself?

See if there are any steps in "What are Good Virus/Spyware?Update/Firewall Practices?" faq779-5240, that may help.

Maybe a randomly generated name for a known virus/spyware exe. I ran across a similar message in another forum the other day. the users spyware program couldn't find anything and I couldn't google the exe. Is your spyware up to date? Check netstat -ano for that process and see what port and protocol it may be using and then search from there.

Good luck
