i hate to bug everyine on this but this wa sin the event log under information and i was woundering what it ment. Is this something that is normal or should this not be going on?thanks

This is normal. Win 2K and 2003 server perform an online defrag of the Active Directory every 12 hours (by default). This message is simply making note of the start of that defrag process.

The ntds.dit is the storage file of the active directory.
