Good Afternoon,

I recently changed my DSL connection from USB to Ethernet to I could add a router to an old desktop. When I first made the switch I released the USB IP and then selected the Ethernet card in the winipcf window. It worked great and faster than ever. However, after I shut down the pc and tried to reboot, I can not connect to the internet. I went back and tried to hook up the original usb and that will not work either. It seems as if ME will not allow me to release and renew the ip.

Any ideas? Is it an issue with the TCI/IP properties?

I would start by removing all installed adapters except Dial-up, reboot, then reinstall your ethernet adapter. That should repair any corrupted winsock settings in your TCP/IP stack...

Thanks for the prompt resposne. So you want me to remove the ethernet card and drivers? Then reboot and then reinstall?

Yes, and also any other network adapters listed in Device Manager (besides the dial-up adapter if you have one).

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
" " /renew
" " /registerdns

hope it helps!

Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, while others wonder what happened.

Rebooting the PC flushes DNS automatically. Therefore, that shouldn't be the problem.

I'm guessing that somehow your USB network adapter is interfering after a reboot since you left it installed.

By the way, if you want to try Cupid's suggestion, you would go to Start -> Run, type command and hit OK. Then you can run the commands he listed, though they are already part of the reboot process...

Well, I got fed up yesterday and shut down the PC, unplugged the DSL modem and let it sit over night. I set up the modem back up with the USB port and plugged everything back in, powered up and was able to log on to the internet today. So I am back at the starting point minus a lot of wasted time.

I really would like to use the Ethernet connection; I am now just a little gun shy. I am going to make another run at it tonight using the above recommendations.

I am just wondering if there are multiple TCI/IP instances for the Ethernet card, which is causing the problems. I did not check the network config properties last time.

Yeah, I'm thinking multiple instances might be part of the problem. Hopefully removing it all and readding should clear that up. You could needle through and find what's wrong, but doing that will probably take more time than just starting from scratch.
