I am running SUN 5.8 on an enterprise 250. I have not been able to get the ethernet interfaces to work. Receive error:
hme. SUNW,hme0: No Response from Ethernet Network: Link down -- cable problem?

Since I get this error, the ndd -get /dev/hme link_status is always 0.

Tested the network connections via my laptop and they are working. Using hyperterm to get in via the console port.

I have a working cable in the TP slot. I was told hme is only connected to the system board.

We also have a 100baseT adapter in one of the PCI slots. I inserted another working cable in there. I thought this would be dmfe0, but there is none in the ifconfig -a or in the /dev directory. What would it be know as???? Do I need to run something so the system sees it?

Any other suggestions on what to do?

Thanks....

If you have the part# of the card it would help.
If this is a hme card then run;

more /etc/path_to_inst | grep hme* (this will give you the hme devices)

try
ifconfig hme1 plumb
ifconfig hme1 inet ipaddress -trailers up

the above will only soft set it, if you want to hard set then you need to create in /etc:

hostname.hme1 file, put the name you want

Also edit your hosts file and assign an ip to the name in hostname.hme1

let us know, post the output from path_to_inst

Thanks
