I wanted to know if it is necessary to create a port into a trunk port to create an etherchannel? I know that one uses trunk port for multiple Vlans however, is there any reason why the port should be trunk to create an etherchannel?

Thank You

no, you do'nt have to trunk to use port channels.. two totally different things..

Thank you for your help

For IOS switches just add this to the interfaces "channel-group 1 mode desirable" .

However, I first must create the port-channel 1? For example (interface port-channel 1).

no.. do as vipergg says.. when you do this command it'll automatcially create the port channel..

if you do it the other way, the port channel will never form..
