have a problem with a particular nt machine and printing..the printer hp deskjet 850c works fine on other pc's but when attached to the nt machine in question i get the following error message:
error writing to lpt1: for (whatever) page. the system cannot find the file specified.
this happens when trying to print any document including the test page. ive tried reinstalled the printer/drivers etc and have applied the latest service pack to the nt o/s. was thinking of rebuilding the machine but is this absolutely necessary? have i missed summat? any help would be greatly appreciated! thanx

Not to sure, have you looked in the bios, to verify that the port is configured ok? I know that you can set the ports to different configurations. Maybe just try changing the port config in the bios, and see what happens. There's only a few different possibilities, try them one at a time, or refer to the printer documentation as that should tell you.

Hope that helps
