Every time I start up my pc I get an error window that says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A:" I have googled this error message and I get repairs for "There is no disk in the drive Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR5" Which has nothing to do with my problem. I did find one thing awhile back that stated that it had to do with quicktime, and for me to clean out the history on it and disable start up and it worked for a day. Now I am still getting same window and quicktime is not on start up. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this message appearing when machine boots or from windows after its loaded?

Forum member jmp56 discussed this recently as a Quick Time flaw: thread616-1065991

This occurs after windows loads. bcastner I am not using quick Time.

Then it is likely, not gauranteed, a boot.ini issue.
If FAT32 as a filestore:
If NTFS as a filestore, see the freeware EditBINI:
Or just use Recovery Console and bootcfg:
Having said all of that, it is perfectly possible this is a malware issue. See faq608-4650

If you use MsConfig to check your Startups is there anything which is pointing to Drive A:?

Is there any other Startup location pointing to A:?

Auto Start Viewer.

This problem can also occur when the PATH statement in the Environment Variables, or User Environment Variables for <user name> refers to a floppy disk drive.

Sorry for the long delay in replying. No I dont have anything pointing toward A: drive in msconfig.

With this message displayed try running Task Manager and check for anything strange under the Applications or Processes tabs.

Do you get this prompt if you start in Safe Mode?

310353 - How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP

316434 - HOW TO: Perform Advanced Clean-Boot Troubleshooting in Windows XP

310560 - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

It might be useful to run a Registry Cleaner program and see if that helps.

Ok the prompt does not come on in safe mode. I checked the registry (local machine-software-microsoft-windows-current-run) and the quicktime abootime was there so I deleted it and I restarted the computer and there it was again.

see this thread (since you said the quicktime entry was in the registry, it implies that the software is installed on your pc, regardless of whether or not it was running):
"<remove the quotes and paste address into browser>

Possible options (if you are indeed suffering the symptoms as described in the apple thread and quicktime is installed on your pc):
1) You can leave quicktime installed and try the "fixes" mentioned in the above thread.

2) Uninstall quicktime completely, and try the "Quicktimealt130rc6.exe" quicktime alternative member micker377 suggests in this thread(thanks, micker):

3) If the message was the result of a removable drive or media in a card reader, etc. - insert media into that drive or reconnect the missing external drive

I just cant get the apple link posted properly :-(

to requote myself:
"to get to this link (which isnt posting properly) - i went to the quicktime support area, clicked on discussions, and found the post "no disk in drive error." FYI"

how do you do that "code" box here? :)

jimp56,

How does it appear in the Preview if you uncheck "Process TGML" in the box above "Submit Post"?

You can also click on the words (link) "Process TGML" for more details.

jimp56,
If you code it, it will not hyperlink. In any case you use
Code:
 followed after the text with
to create a code block. Or, just uncheck "Process TGML" when creating a reply.

tonycard,
Some versions of quick time offer an uninstall with a right click on the tray icon.

Check Control Panel, Add/Remove programs to see if there is an entry for Quicktime. I so, use this to remove it.

If using XP with Service Pack 2, in IE, Tools, Manage Add-ons, remove Quicktime if found.

You can use MSCONFIG or my preference, Autoruns, to disable Quicktime from starting:
Finally I view quicktime behavior like I view malware, and the steps outlinedin faq608-4650 will let you remove it. Let Hijack This identify the registry run key involved, and click to fix it. Then delete the file(s) involved.

I did uninstall quicktime from the add/remove and I restarted it and its still there. Now I am confused but when the error (There is no disk in the drive Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR5) is being used is the last part stating that it is saying either drive or device or harddisk or does the error actually say There is no disk in the drive Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR5 like that, because mine does not have all of that in the end only that there is no disk in drive A:.

It is a bug. The bug is due to the fact that quicktime is still there.

Did you try disabling the startup entry with MSCONFIG, Autoruns or Hijack This?

The error you mention (insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR5) has nothing to do with any Floppy drive.

The variable device is the device name for a partition (such as \device\harddisk0).

The name can be obtained from the output of the map command. An example of a device name is:

\Device\HardDisk0.

Map, (a Recovery Console command), displays currently active device mappings. Include the arc option to specify the use of Advanced RISC Computing (ARC) paths (the format for Boot.ini) instead of Windows device paths.

\device\harddisk1\d is referring to a drive, you can confirm which one by looking at the Disk Management tool and seeing which it refers to as "Disk 1", "Disk 0" etc. in the bottom pane.

Floppy drive activates when opening files
thread779-865347

quicktime start up program was unchecked in msconfig and I checked hijack this and nothing was there.

this is intriguing. i'd like to find the root cause, as this keeps happening to others.....let me sleep on it and we will revisit it. linney, bcastner - thanks for the tips.

i am embarassed. I've completely missed the point:
"because mine does not have all of that in the end only that there is no disk in drive A:."

please ingore all the previous advice. will have to start from scratch. D'oh!!

after all, you did say "the DR5 has nothing to do with me." Sometimes you cant see the forest through the trees....

The sad part is, I DO know how to read.....

It cannot reinstall if you delete the files required for quicktime.

-or-
1. Choose Start > All Programs > QuickTime > Uninstall QuickTime

2. Delete the quicktime.cpl and quicktime.qtp files in the Windows\System32 folder.

3. Empty the Recycle Bin and restart Windows.

-or-

Odd as it may seem: download and reinstall Quicktime. Then follow the above to uninstall.
