Error:Unable to record macros in Excel 97 1

Hello All,

In excel 97, when macros was tried to be enabled by using
Tools-->Options--->Macros---->Record Macros.
A box comes up and ask to name the macros, and when you click ok.
Error message came up "Unable to record macros"

For some reasons,macros can not be enabled for some users unless given the localadministrator rights. We don't want to do this for every users. Reinstall of excel did not solve the problem and neither did a reinstall of office 97.However some users who are using office 2003 dont have any problem .
We are using Win xp professional sp2, office 97/Outlook 2000/2003

Any ideas how this can be solved?

You have an option for what workbook (file) you want to record the macro IN. If you select 'current workbook' - and the current workbook is on a network drive that the user doesn't have Write access to, you will run into problems.

Instead, most macros can be recorded into the "Personal.xls". If the user doesn't already have such a file, one will be created for them. I think the default location for the file with Excel 97 is
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART (Where User Name is the user's windows login.)

This file will automatically open every time the user opens Excel, so they will always have access to the macros it contains.

I looked for the personal.xls file in the xlstart folder but wasn not there. Do I create this folder inside of the xlstart ?

No need. When you go to record a macro, you can still choose PERSONAL. Excel will create the file for you.
