Trying to compact a back-end Access 97 database (230mb) on the network, but keep getting "Record(s) can't be read; no read permission on 'dbpath'". Can anyone help? I ran the repair before the compact. Thanks in advance.

This error can be caused if you have an autoexec macro which opens a form on startup. If this is the case rename the macro before you do the compact, then name it back afterwards.

I do have a form that displays at startup, but no autoexec macro.

Any other ideas?

Is the compacted db created, ie is there a compacted version of your db in the same directory as the original, it will be called db1.mdb, if so the compacting is taking place it's just the renaming that's not working. This can be caused by the startup form, so if the temp db is being created, try setting no start up form then compacting.

Yes db1 is being created, so it must be during the rename. I will give this a try on the next compact. Thanks for the help.
