Windows XP, Excel 2002, while using, message "An unexpected error has occurred. Autorecover has been disabled for this session of Excel" verbatim. When you click OK you can continue to work, but it will continue to reappear throughout your work session. How do I get rid of this message for good? Thanks, Janet Lyn

Tools, Options, Save tab. Check the Autorecover box and set it a reasonable time. (I recommend 10 mins).

Those settings were already in place. Someone suggested it could be an update needs to be done (Service Pack). I am checking on that now. Thanks, JL

Have tried to see if you have a file with an xlb extension. If you do, try to rename it and start Excel again.

There were not any .xlb file extensions. However, I did find an update to Excel 2002 that had not been installed so I will see if that works. Thanks so much for your help. Janet Lyn

I am going to sound like a broken record....But, that xlb file may be a hidden file. Usually residing at C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel.

To make sure you can see it, you need to go to Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder options, View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and Folders" is selected. While you are doing that, might be a good idea to uncheck "Hide File extensions of known File Types" and after that look for the xlb file. "Aliquando et insanire iucundum est"

OK, what is "Aliquando et insanire iucundum est"? I did what you said and there were not any documents in the Excel folder. No hidden files, nothing with .xlb. I have another employee who is also having link problems and it has to do with his c:\d&s folder so maybe they are related. See my help question "Excel Links" in same forum for description of that problem. Again, thanks, any more suggestions? JL

Means: It is sometimes pleasant to act like a madman "Aliquando et insanire iucundum est"

Do the total number of characters including the path and the filename exceed 255? actually I should say 218... there is something weird about exceeding 218, I can't remember at the moment. Getting old... tempers fugit..... "Aliquando et insanire iucundum est"

I'm assuming you mean the link that does not want to update? The total number of characters, including the = sign, are 85. After talking to him yesterday, I found out this is an ongoing thing. Everytime he opens his timecard he has to "re-point" the source so it can find the right links again.
