Hello,
I am veryfing that our backups are being completed successfully.
I am listing the contents of the rootvg volume group tape backup by issuing the command:
restore -T -s 4 -vqf /dev/rmt0.1

It shows me the following error messages:

restore: 0511-119 There is a missing header block.
restore: 0511-137 Trying to find the next header. Data may be lost.

Then it continues with this:

Starting again at file ./var/psm/.RISC1/42.142082.
621 ./bosinst.data
6660 ./image.data
0 ./var/psm

And then it shows the rest of the files saved on the tape.
Is it normal? Do I have to worry because I won't be able to restore the rootvg volume group in case of disaster?
Thanks in advance,
enriqcore

Are you skipping the first 3 files ?

These are described below;

Alex

Image #1: The bosboot image contains a copy of the system's kernel and specific device drivers, allowing the user to boot from this tape.
blocksize: 512
format: raw image
files: kernel device drivers
Image #2: The mkinsttape image contains files to be loaded into the RAM file system when you are booting in maintenance.
blocksize: 512
format: backbyname
files: ./image.data, ./tapeblksz,
./bosinst.data and commands
Image #3: The dummy image contains a single file containing the words "dummy toc". This image is used to make the mksysb tape contain the same number of images as a BOS Install tape.
Image #4: The rootvg image contains data from the rootvg volume group (mounted JFS file systems ONLY).
blocksize: determined by tape drive configuration
on create
format: backbyname
files: rootvg, mounted JFS filesystems

Alex,
I couldn't find the image #3 that is represented by a file containing the words dummy toc. The others are Ok. I am looking at the listing of the restore -T command.
Am I doing Ok?

This what I use (it works!)

mt -f /dev/rmt0.1 rewind

mt -f /dev/rmt0.1 fsf 3

restore -Tqf /dev/rmt0.1

excellent, Alex!
It worked fine.
Now, the questions are:
Did anybody ever restored the complete rootvg volume group from a tape successfully? And what about the complete system?
Regards
enriqcore

I have done this, and I am sure many others have as well. I used a bootable image created on 8mm by mksysb. It is not something that I have done recently. I have used savevg/restvg not too long ago for recreating vg when they were too large and it works nicely and easily. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation
