Every time my XP-Home computer starts, I get this added to my error.log in the C:\

>>>'CRITICAL ERROR: No files found in directory '%s', assuming the directory is errant.');
CRITICAL ERROR: No files found in directory 'C:\PROGRA~1\DCW6\*.*', assuming the directory is errant.

Any ideas? This was upgraded from a win98se

Does DCW6 mean anything to you such as a program (or part of) you have installed?

Can you track down what is causing this message and creating the error log?

Auto Start Viewer.

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

No DCW6 is not the name of any software I have or can remember I ever had.

I will try the links yous sent.

Thanks

OK I found the trouble maker, it is a Service.

The name is "Crypkey License" and manufacturer is "unknown".

If I set everything back normal Startup, in the General tab, then uncheck this item in the services tab, the error.log is not created.

Now, how do I find and remove this service?

I found it listed in "component Services", "services (local)"

It is now listed as Disabled as I have done so. It has no dependencies and it's path is cryserv.exe. I searched and found it in the c:\windows\system32 directory.
