Error issues re available RAM

My son has an HP 6745C with Windows ME. System indicates 198 meg of RAM but shows less than 5% available, even though the only programs operating are Explorer and Scandisk. When Scandisk runs it generates an error saying there is insufficient RAM to complete the Scan task.
Computer was fine until yesteday morning. No previous problem of this type.

Up to date anti-virus? If not, get one (AVG is very good and free) and run a scan.

Up to date anti-spyware etc (the etc is because there's an ever increasing list of names for stuff that makes its way onto your machine for no good purposes, uninvited)? If not, download and run spybot and adaware (others may suggest more software - like's M$'s new offering - but start with those 2, usually pick up most stuff).

PS - presume you've made no hadrware/software changes to machine?
