Ok, i just formatted this dell computer and used a dell reinstall CD for Windows XP Pro w/ SP2. After it installs im trying to go in and add the IIS snap-in and also im adding the FAX printer from our Win2k3R2 fax server and both are giving me errors. it keeps saying it cant copy the files and it wants the cd. I put the cd in and try it and it still wont work. I copy all the files over onto the hdd and point it to there and it finds what it wants but then it gives me an error cause it cant copy the expanded version of that file. I cant even get it to expand manually.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I have a Windows XP Pro cd w/ SP1 that i got from microsoft if i should try it like that, but ive never had a problem with these dell cds.

Can you post your exact error messages, it might help the search for a solution, you can try these in the meanwhile.

Error messages when trying to install IIS components on Windows XP

Installing IIS after Service Pack 2

You may receive the "Setup cannot copy the file staxmem.dll" error message when you try to install IIS on a computer that is running Windows XP Professional with SP2

when i try to install IIS i get a setup cannot copy the file error... and it cant copy even if i try different sp2 cd or a different location. Some of the files that cant be copied i listed below.

zClientm.exe
ZnetM.dl_
cmnclim.dl_
zoneclim.dl_

And its the same problem when i go to install the shared fax printer on our windows fax server. It cant copy the files for the fax service.

The computer was reinstalled with Windows XP Pro w/SP2 using a Dell Restore CD. I have even integrated SP2 into basic Windows XP Pro cd that didnt have sp2 and it still wont work.

Can you confirm that nothing in those links helped the situation.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.

Checking the RAM might be worthwhile too.

Disable any security programs you have running, including any Bios virus scanner that might be enable.

Anything showing up in the Event Viewer?

Can Dell Support shed any light on the matter?

Anything in the Setup logs from the Windows Install, or the later attempts to load IIS or Fax Services?

You can review the Setupapi.log file, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file (in the %windir% folder) to try to determine any problems.

Windows Setup and Device Installation Logging

Maybe you could make use of SubInAcl similar to what is mentioned in this thread, if it is a Permissions problem?

ok...

1) its not asking for that file STAXMEM.dll and the database is not bad.
2) Service pack was installed when i installed XP pro as it was already on the CD, so that doesnt help. ALready tried.
3) the 3rd link doesnt help.

There is nothing wrong with the HDD. It is only a couple months old and Ive had IIS installed on it before. There is no antivirus even installed on this computer yet, and i have windows firewall disabled. Nothing is in the event viewer, and Dell support is a waste of time and the computer is already out of its warranty period.

-------

i tried something while i was typing this... I removed the internet games from windows components and left solitare, minesweeper, stuff like that and then tried to install IIS and it worked.

Why do the internet games keep it from installing?

That is a strange solution but nevertheless it is great that you have solved your problem.

There is some mention of Internet Games causing this problem but you have to dig deep to find it on the Web. Sounds like a bug that might have slipped through the system, I for one will bear it in mind, for that I thank you.
