I need to get the SQL Server Developer on my laptop but can't get it to install without error. I initially installed the Enterprise edition with SP3 but later found out that I need the Developers edition.

I uninstalled the Enterprise edition through add/delete programs and deleted the SQL Server related registry keys, based on Microsoft's instruction. When I go to install the developer's edition, first off, it never asks me for the CD key and I notice before even starts to write files that the CD reg keys I deleted are now there again using my old CD key from the Enterprise edition.

Then as it is installing the files I get a message that the xpstar.rll is not where it should be on my CD. I see it but it's in a different folder in the Developer edition install. On the Enterprise edition, it is there though.

Can someone please help??

You might need to get one of those registry cleanup tools that pulls all instances of keys with Microsoft SQL Server and deletes them for you. I don't know the name of any off the top of my head, but I'm sure you can Google a few of them. The other option is using the Find tool in the Registry itself, but I understand that takes a lot more time than getting those tools.

IF you decide to try these options, make sure to *backup your registry first!!!* and then store it on a floppy or bootable CD incase something happens to your PC.

Remember, registry keys can be located in many many places, so your registry may be "fixing" itself by trying to pull in data that is missing from another place in the registry. Honestly, I don't enough about Windows to be able to tell you what tool it is using to do this. I've just heard of it happening to other people -- Could be one of those internet myths, though.
