i just would like to ask what seems to be the problem..when i try to install windows XP, it doesnt install because upon checking before installation, it says "caanot install winxp because ohci1934.sys is corrupted, press ok to restart" and same thing will happen when i reboot. what do i need to do? what is this error. thank you

sounds like your install disc may be dirty, damaged or scratched. is this a fresh install or a repair install?

First, it is not "ohci1934.sys"

A 1394 "firewire" device has native support. jmp56 has a good start. I would either disable in BIOS the 1394 Firewire support, or remove the third-party firewire card from the machine during installation.

You can battle issues with the card or 1394 being recognized after you install XP. Just do not fight peripheral problems during install. Disconnect everything unecessary -- whether USB or firewire during installation. Add them back on by one post-install.

its a clean install, and i guess its not a disc problem since i tried 2 different installation disk..with regards to that firewire thing...i never saw any firewire port for the PC..so i gave up..what i did, i just put a windows98.. :( anyways, if i upgrade to winxp will this still occur? if you think its "yes" then i wont proceed..i might have problems later if do it..anyway thanks for the advise..i appreciate the help.

since it apparently wasnt the install disc or a firewire problem, i would run scandisk/chkdsk to do a full check on the hard drive, maybe there is/was a bad spot on the hard drive, even though win98 installed properly.

its hard to say if the upgrade would work, because it could still have possibly been a hardware detection problem of some sort. start with checking the hard drive out and go from there.

only other guess would be a problem with the cdrom drive, but that isnt probable since win98 worked ok.
