Hi, I'm not the most technically savvy person around so please try to follow me.

Here is the scoop.

I have Broadband hooked up to a LinkSys WRT54GS with SpeedBooster router. From that router, I have a desktop wired to it as well as a laptop that uses wireless. Both computers are running windows xp

Yesterday, I updated the security on the router. I have a unique SSID and password. I have WPA2 password protection. I have the MAC set up so it only recognizes my laptop. I also enabled file sharing and printer sharing so I can use the printer that is connected to the desktop.

Now I keep getting a window that pops up that tries to dial the VPN. It has my name and asks for a password. I have no idea what that password is. If I click connect, it tries to dial and then I get "800 Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection"

From what I understand, and remember that I am not very smart when it comes to this sort of thing, is a VPN is used to connect my network (my desktop and laptop) to another person's network.

The problem comes in because I have no other network to connect to. Do I need VPN? If not, how do I disable that box from coming up?

Could anyone help?

If you think you don't need the VPN, you just disable/remove it. To do this, open the properties of My Network Places, delete it. or open IE>Tools>Internet Connection>Connection, high light the VPN connection and check never dial a connection.

How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on

Bob,

Thank you for the quick reply. That seemed to do the trick but now I am facing another problem.

Allright, I connect to my router via wireless on my laptop to my router. When I am done, I shut down any applications I have running. Then, I put the computer in hibernate by closing the screen. Before all this router nonsense, it would log off my user name.

When I open up the screen and take the laptop out of hibernate, I go back to the Log In screen. But next to my log in name, it says I am still logged in and says if I have any e-mail waiting for me. This never happened before.

Then I log in again and it connects to my neighbor's router. Now, I don't want to connect to my neighbor's router, obviously.(His connection is unsecured and much slower) I assume this is happening because the first login is already connected to my router.

How do I stop this?
