Ok So Im trying to establish a VPN between my home pc and my workstation
at school.I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and make it work with
microsoft's vpn software.

Running XP pro on both machines, using the packaged windows VPN
software. Have my machine at home setup as the server. Trying to go though the school's
T1 to my cable connection at home ...Every time I try to connect it gets as far as registering
computer on network, before I get error #733. Cant connect because the server and WS
couldnt negotiate PPP control protocols

I heard this was a generic error code and can mean a bunch of things.
I read that it might have to do with muti-link for singel link connections option,
but I have that enabled. Or that it maybe the hardware, but my router
supports VPN passthrough PPTP, IPSEC. I have all the correct ports forwarded.
Also, the server is setup to assign IPs through DHCP for vpn clients.

I dont know what else to do to get this to work.
(btw my router is a Blittz BWA711)

I think it may have something to do with the server configuration because I
can't even test it on LAN, i have the same problem.

Anyone work with VPNs alot and know where to go on this one.
besides using 3rd party vpn software?

Any help is greately appreciated. I'd love to get this to
work. It would make my like much easier.

On your router you'll need PPTP and GRE forwarded correctly, however if the School is set up correctly they'll ban PPTP out of their network to stop exactly what you wish to do.

Have you run this by the schools IT staff? Would think that such a thing would be against policy.

I just wanted to test it at school. Well its a
technical college I dont think they would mind if it was
jsut for the learning experience.

Thing is, I can't even get it to work while testing it on
my LAN. Not sure why.

I have PPTP tcp port 1723, IPSEC udp port 500, as well as 50-51 udp & tcp (<-wasnt sure which one) forwarded to the
machine setup to be the server. I dont have a few other
ports forwarded as well but they dont really have any
relation to vpn.

How do you setup GRE or is it something thats setup with
IPSEC.

I know my router is compatable with the vpn passthrough,
but I just can't seem to get it to work. Never really
tried it before so I dont know whats wrong.
