Hi all. We had a strange occurance today. Our site kept slowing down to a pace and the server reporting the culprit as being SQL Server. But looking at the log files and running a SQL profiler yielded nothing strange/odd. No new queries were created and no existing queries were modified.

We use Coldfusion as our server side language, and the CF logs say SQL error 109 occured.

On Microsoft's site, error 109 is "This can happen if a named pipes connection is lost during a write." What does that mean? And, why did that happen all of a sudden?

Any light shedded on this would be great.

Thanks.

Please run

Select @@Version

Post the result back here.

Mr. Denny posted a link to this site a little while ago. After determining your service pack level, go to this site.

You will see what the numbers reported by Enterprise Manager really mean.

Hi, just ran that code and this is what it came back with:
Code:
Microsoft SQL Server 7.00 - 7.00.1094 (Intel X86) May 29 2003 15:21:25 Copyright (c) 1988-2002 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.0 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4)

Any ideas?

Ok, so I looked my SQL version on the site you mentioned and two links appear to be valid:

[LN];Q274329
and

I believe the 2nd link is the culprit. Does this mean that someone with SQL server user/password (like a developer, admin or someone with rights) is using SQL Server they "hijack" the pipe?

MS has a patch for this, but we're always hesitant when it comes to installing patches, since most of MS products go from bad to worse when a patch is applied.

Any light shed on this would be awesome.

Thanks.

You are obviously using sql server 7, which I am unfamiliar with (sorry). My recommendation would be to patch your system to the latest version. The truth is, I don't know if this would resolve your problem.

Originally, I was thinking along the lines of SQL Slammer virus. I don't know if sql 7 suffers from this virus or not.

Of course, you could always 'wait and see' if someone else around here has another suggestion.

Good Luck.

gmmastros, thanks for all your help. What we ended up doing was re-installing the patch. The problem only happened yesterday, so we don't think it was a serious thing. But the network guys installed the patch, and now we play the wait game. Don't you love that game?

Have a great weekend.
