Enterprise Manager - No Databases

Hello All,

I wanted to have a quick look at my SQL Server this morning to check why my Scheduled Backups weren't going through and when going into Enterprise Manager there are NO Databases. It shows "No Items" If I go into the Query Analyzer everything works fine and the software using the database is working 100%

What would cause such a problem and does anyone have any ideas on how I can correct it.

At whcih level ar ethere no databases,
Can you see the SQl Server Group, Can you then see the servers below it etc.

It still remains the same, No Databases

I can see teh SQL Group, I can see the SQL Server which says uts running (The green Arrow) and under there I get the Databses Folder, in there I should have about 12 datadases and it says "No Items" As I said earlier, the Query Analyzer still picks everything up perfectly.

You probably lost security priveleges.
Have the DBA look at your rights.

Don't think it's either of those, happens on the server as well.

Some more info, I can't do anything, if i try to create a New Database i get:

Error 220: Arithmetic Overflow error for Data Type smallint ....

There are no Alerts in the Event Log.

Hope you have a backup. See if you can perform a new backup and then try detaching the db and reattach it.

If Query Analyzer is working correctly and you can access the database via that, I would guess that EM got 'hosed' some how. Try to reinstall it. From the SQL Server installation disk, select Client Tools Only. You will get to a window where you can be specific about which tools you want installed. Uncheck everything except EM. (It won't uninstall anything - you just don't want to reinstall QA).

You might also try installing the latest MDAC.

Final thought, are you on a WinXP machine? Did you recently upgrade to Service Pack 2? If so, have you opened the builtin firewall to SQL Server?

I agree with SQLBill on this one. Both on the Enterprise Manager suggestion and the Windows XP SP2 firewall problem.

Enterprise Manager has this strange ability to go ka-ka for no apparent reason. If you can't reinstall your client tools, try copying the SQLEM.MSC file from the CD to the path where the SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC is, rename the old then rename to new to something simple like EntManager.msc.

Thanks for the responses, SQLBill and Catadmin.

I tried all options on my local PC, yes I am using Win XP and SP2 is installed, I turned off the firewall, re-installed the EM and replaced the the .MSC file. I spoke to our System Admin and he has recently installed Service Packs on the Server, so he will be re-applying the Service Packs and seeing if that will help at all. The error is affecting both PC's that have the Client Tools installed as well as the Server itself.

Which Service Packs were applied on the server? Are you talking about SQL Server Service Packs?

FYI-XP SP2 firewall blocks the DEFAULT port for SQL Server. If your SQL Server isn't using that port, you might have to open an additional port.

If the problem here is caused by a firewall issue, then QA wouldn't work either. Since QA is working properly, I think it is probably NOT a firewall issue.

Doesn't EM use sqldmo to do it 'magic'. Could someone have installed software that put a different version of sqldmo.dll on the computer?

On my computer... C:\program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\binn\sqldmo.dll
The version reports as 2000.80.194.0

BTW, this may not be the latest and greatest version.
