I SEEK THE METHOD OF ACCESSING LOGFILE TO SEE IF INTRUDER (A REAL ONE) REALLY is TRUE .ITS WINDOWS 98 AND I HAVE A DESKTOP PASSWORD AND TODAY FOR NO REASON OF MY DOING IT OPENED IN SAFE MODE - AND WHAT A STORY HAS CULMINATED IN THESE HORRIBLE EVENTS- WILL WRITE BOOK- I REALL HOPE SOMEONE CAN POINT ME TO A SOURCE OF HOW TO SEE WAY BACK (AS I GATHER THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO DO)

when the shutdown isnt properly done the reboot will go into safe mode, that doesnt mean an intruder was on your pc

w98 itself doesnt do any logging

Logaccess - please don't type in caps - its considered to be shouting. As lemon13 said, 98 doesn't record logon attempts - and having a password on it makes no difference, you can just press the Esc key to bypass it.

You may have a hardware problem - or it may just have been a glitch - win98 occasionally has the odd issue for no apparent reason. If it recurs frequently over the next few days, post back - otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Dear lemon3vand wolluf yes have just found it to be true -ive never loaded music- been intuded and they try and screw with my head but its been through so much i dont care just would be nice to find out who its a bunch an they think they know me god its been a rough time but thanks for your help

First of all, if you have a high-speed broadband connection, you should be behind NAT (Network Address Translation). Look at your computer's IP address by doing the following:

1) Start -> Run
2) type winipcfg and click OK

If your IP address starts with 192.168, then you're behind NAT. The only way the "average" kiddie hacker could get into your PC from the outside is to take the time to scan traffic coming in and out of your modem/router, or to infect your PC from within (they had to trick you into opening/installing something you shouldn't have).

With a high-speed connection, simply turn your DSL or Cable modem off and back on. This will give you a new IP address which is only traceable if the other guy has infected your PC.

There are many free and low-cost firewall solutions out there too. I still like to recommend Zonealarm Pro, which gives you full visibility of the traffic coming in and leaving your PC. I suggest you search the net for in-depth discussions on the subject.

If you are still convinced that someone is messing with you, format your hard drive and start over with a clean install of Windows. Better yet, take this old one off the network and buy a new one that has Windows XP. Even the basic $500 PC is going to blow your old one away...

consider installing a keystroke logger. at least you would know what any intruders had typed. might provide a clue.

might also be worth setting up a hidden videocam/webcam if you are still concerned about another intrusion.
