in the gantt view the line that shows the current date is very faint. is there a way to customize this line so that you can make it a different color or size?

Enhance the line that identifies the current date

Right-Click on the Gantt Chart area and select "Gridlines". A pop-up box called "Gridlines" will open. Select the "Current Date" line from the "Line to Change" list - it should be the fifth from the top. You should get a display reflecting the current "Type" and "Color" of the current date line. You can change the style of the line, but not the size (you can't make it thicker). If you change the color from grey to black it will show up better.
