Hi,

When trying to enable my LAN connection on my hard wired PC, XP tries to enable it then gives me a 'connection failed' message. My laptop is wirelessly connected to my router and it can access the internet just fine. The PC that can't access the internet is hard wired. My ISP says I have to re-install windows xp on my hard wired PC because it's probably corrupted.

Anyone know a way out or a fix for this?

Thanks
Jeff.

What kind of connection is it? Ethernet, USB?
If ethernet are you using astraight through or cross wired cable? How long is that cable?
How are you trying to enable a connection? Via the wizard?

In Control Panel, network connections, do you have a connection icon for that device? If so, does it have TCP/IP installed? If so, is that configured to aquire an IP address automatically? You can right click on the connection icon and try a 'repair'.

Open a command window and type ipconfig/all and report the results back here.

Do you get a link light on the router where the cable is plugged in? How about on the back of the network card? Does it have lights? Green is connected and orange is not. It could be as easy as a bad cable.

pc to pc is cross-over cable. pc to router should be straight.
you should delete this connection, and use the connection wizard to create a new connection. then you should have these in the properties:
client for microsoft networks
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks
QoS packet scheduler
internet protocol (TCP/IP)
check the ip config as std says, and see if it's assigned via dhcp, or is a fixed ip address. what's the subnet mask? what is the default gateway for each pc?
can the pc ping himself using ip address or computer name?
can it ping the other pc?

Check NIC card and TCP/IP stack by pinging 127.0.0.1
