I ran the command ipconfig /all in Windows 2000 server, and I noticed that it said that WINS proxy and DHCP services were not enabled. I want to enable both of them but am not sure how to do so. I have both DHCP and WINS installed. How do I enable these services?

Many thanks!

Go to Start...Programs...Administrative Tools on the Server. Both tools are identified by their names; WINS and DHCP.

With DHCP all you need to do is define a scope by right clicking the server and follow the wizard. If you use AD (I am assuming you won't be) then you will need to authorise the scope once it has been created. In here you can set many options such as the default gateways, dns servers, wins servers, time servers etc for your clients.

WINS allows your win9x clients to resolve netbios names to IP's; you can add static mappings and view current mappings in the db through here; also semi straightforward to use.

I am not sure If I am reading/understanding the problem. On a server you typed ipconfig/all and saw that DHCP and Wins Proxy were set as disabled. Do you want to enable these for your server? If so, why?
Servers generally have static Ip addresses and should not be set as DHCP clients. Secondly, You can add a WINS server address in the TCP/IP advanced options of your server should you wish. Your server wouldn't be the WINS server by any chance?
If you want to set up DHCP and WINS for clients, then the steps listed above by terrywilson is good.

ClaudeK is quite right, Ipconfig is the config of the device you are running on. Servers should have a static IP, so you would not expect it to have got it's IP address from a DCHP server.

As for WINS, Dump it if you can (if you have no pre W2k clients and you do not need to restrict a login to a workstation), Use DNS instead.

Thank you all for your comments, they were helpful!
