I am working on a problem in our transcription dept where we're doing all sorts of funky stuff with merging documents and embedding wav objects. The problem I'm having is that when I get a doc with an embedded wav object, I cannot open that wav file in, say, Media Player (or any other 3rd party program that I associate .wav with) and play/pause/forward it. If I double-click on the file, it appears to play using sndrec32.exe in the background and I have no control over it. Changing file associations does absolutely nothing. I'm assuming that's because this embedded object isn't "seen" as a wav file, but some kind of metafile. I cannot right-click and save either, which also leads me to the conclusion that it's some sort of shortcut or metafile. I've tried right-clicking and selecting "convert" but that doesn't do anything either. I have other computers with the exact same software and templates, but it is just this one that is acting this way. I'm not sure what I am missing. Seems like it should be simple, but I have found no way to get that wav file to open in any other program besides sndrec32.exe.

Many thanks for any direction or feedback.

Try right-clicking on the embedded object and choose "properties". This may contain the address of the file you want to save.

If I right-click, I don't get a properties option. I get the typical "right-click" list, with the additional option of: "Sound Recorder Document Object" with the expaned menu of: Play, Edit, Open, Convert. I've clicked all these options and tried to change things to no avail. I can tell you that on a system that is working, it doesn't show up as a Sound Recorder Document Object, but simply a Document Object. That's the lead I've been following, but so far have found nothing. The software is the same and there aren't many options. I'm suspecting that I'm missing some plug-in or add-in within Word maybe.

Can you change the file association to media player for files with that extension?

Oops. Shoulda read the original post more closely - sorry!

Yeah, no matter what I do, an embedded wav file always plays using sndrec32.exe. I've seen this all over the web and there is, according to many, no way to change it. I know for a fact that this is not the case, because I have several other computers which do open embedded wav files in whatever program is specified in the file association.
