We have a relay server with GFI Mailessentials and MailSecurity running on it to scan for viruses and spam, then the email is past to our exchange server with exhange 2003 on it. Co-workers have been complaining that some of their emails will come back as "delayed" and I've also noticed that the queue folder on the relay machine has about 27 emails in it at all times. Some have been in there for over 24 hours at a time. Anyone know what could be going wrong? SMTP problem? I pinged the exchange server from the relay server with success many times so the connection there is good.

Look into your badmail or was it queue folder and see if there are emails in there. You can open the emails (at least the ones in the badmail) by renaming them to .eml and then open them using Outlook express. Also try to restart the smtp service.

I get quite a few of emails in the badmail folder but have a script deleting them every night so it doesnt build up. I also have a script restarting the SMTP service every 3 minutes because that will usually flush the queue folder temporarily, but then it will get another 25 or so emails in there instantly. As of now, the same emails have been sitting in the queue all day. Could it be some sort of DNS problem? I setup our DNS a few months back, but really no hardly anything about it, so i probably missed something.

Are the emails that are stuck always to the same domain ? Are those emails legit emails that your user sends ?

The emails are to our domain yes, the same one, but they are both inbound and outbound emails. A few here and there are legit, but most are SPAM. Is it possibly a problem with our DNS? I don't think I've setup reverse DNS, and I've heard that can cause some possible issues sending emails to certain companies. If so, can someone give me a link to a good site explaining reverse DNS and how to set it up?
