Emails-Can I set internal (LAN) only? 3

Setup: School Enviroment:
PDC/BDC running NT4 SP6
BDC with Proxy Server and running Exchange 5.5 SP2

We originally had staff and students with normal email access but because everyone could see the Global Address book and other problems we took students off email.

We now have all staff members with standard personal email access in and out of the school.
We want to give restricted emails to students with internal access (LAN)only - this would enable instruction in the use of emails without the problems generated by outside access.

Also if this was an option can we keep them out of the Global Address Book view or would we need to set Delivery Restrictions on a user by user basis.

As per restricting students to internal email access only, what i've got is a DL which, if you are a member of it, you are able to send and receive emails externally .ie

Create a Distribution List called, say DL External Access.
On your IMS, on the Delivery Restriction Tab, 'Accept messages from' ->Select 'List', Click on Modify, and Select the newly created DL. Save these settings and add all Staff to the DL External Access.

The IMS will only accept mails from those on the DL, ie Staff and not Students.

Start with deleting their SMTP address too! You don't need that for internal mail.

What Lola has said is very good, and will prevent the students from sending internet mail. However, it might be easier to create a Students distribution list. Having a distribution list that conatins all your regular users could result in a way for your users to send mail to everyone. If you create a Students DL and set the delivery restrictions so that only the Students DL can send to it, your regular users would not be able to send mail to them. You could then add the Students DL to the IMC in the 'Reject From' list.

What marcs41 said is also good. If you don't delete their SMTP address, they would be able to receive mail from outside, even though they wouldn't be able to respond.

I don't think you'll be able to totally prevent them from receiving external emails despite the SMTP address being deleted, as long as the sender knows how to use X400 addressing.

Many thanks for all the above advice - brilliant. I have been working on it all morning and this is what I have done.

Lola: Did this first and great, however it allowed incoming mail from external sources.
Marcs41: Did this second and great again, it sorted the incoming emails.

I will continue to fine tune the DL's and who should be able email who. With 700 students and 80 staff I want to have some control over emails and with the above advice I am heading in the right direction.
There is always someone who will find a way round the system but that's the challenge and how I eventually learn.

Any more tips on this topic grately appreciated.

Quick question for rickyj99:

In Email Properties/Email Addressses I have 4 email addresses listed:
a)CCMAIL b)MS c)SMPT d)X400

This is where I deleted SMPT as advised.
Can d)X400 be deleted? or would this be a silly thing to do. We are very happy with the progress we have made so far.

Silly thing to do, no internal mail anymore.
You will NOT receive any SMTP mail from external sources, they cannot sen to your X400 address unless you setup an X400 link to the outside.
So, rickyj99, you are wrong!
