We are running a NT4 domain with Exch5.5

We are having problems with emails addressed to a recipient constantly bouncing back with permanent errors:

SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<**********@************.co.uk>:
host ****.**********.com [***.***.***.***]: 550 Unknown local user '************@*************.**.**'

However, if this person emails us we can reply to them fine!! We just can't send a new email to this person.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening as it is sending my staff nuts and making me look stupid.

Cheers

Is the reply-to address on the email the send you the same address you are trying to send one out to?

Pretty hard to help you without access to the actual address to play with. Check the actual address vs. the display address vs. the reply address. as in the post above. It could be something like the smtp address at the other end is entered wrong but the reply address is right of course. Exchange can have multiple smtp addresses in there and one is the default one to send from.

I was thinking that it may be an address issue from their end but not knowledgeable enough about mail headers to work it out.

Email comes with sender info in format

'Joe Bloggs' joebloggs@somecompany.com

if I send to joebloggs@somecompany.com we get an error

If I reply 'Joe Bloggs' joebloggs@somecompany.com is in the To box and it works OK

If you send a new message to "Joe Bloggs" from an external account such as hotmail. Does that work?

I haven't tried to do this as "Joe Bloggs" is a contact from another company we deal with and has almost no understanding of technology. If I emailed from an external source, he wouldn't have a clue who it was from, if I explained in the email he wouldn't have a clue what I meant and I don't want to cause unnecessary panic.

I can see why you have suggested this though, maybe I will have to try and create a temp external account and try this at some point.

We are having the same exact problem! And it's off an on, one day it'll go through, then another day it won't.

Here's one with that I sent to a newly created message with
