Looking for some advise on some equipment. Want an eeprom in-line programmer/eraser that will work with the ATMEL AT24RF08C EEPROM. (Those are those nasty little chips they use on the IBM Thinkpad) Have looked around but none seem to be able to work with those chips and be in-line. Looking for an easier solution than the constant replacements that have to be done.

Do you mean EPROM not EEPROM (floppy iFlash ROM)
Anyway is this what you want?

Do a Google for DataRase II EPROM

Hi;
EEPROM It's just a fancy way to say Flash ROM as we all know nowadays as such, or iFlash
EEPROM (Electronically Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory)

With EPROM you could erase the chip, and re-program it with software, but you had to remove it to do it....I think that's what the author's thinking.....unless he wants an EPROM that will do it onboard (inline?? as above)(they were available) so you didn't even have to remove/replace the chip

TT4u, thanks, but no, have two similar they won't work with this PROM. This is a true 8K EEPROM, when the power dies on the boards it keeps ALL info tightly locked. It needs an electrical erase. This is an 8 pin JEDEC SOIC package, its dual port, RFID and serial. this has to be erased 1 block at a time. What I was looking for was a unit that is compatible with this chip and also in-system, in-line, onboard. There, I think I got what every/anybody refers to them as. Maybe they are just non existent? Thanks

I was very familiar with EPROMs. I've replaced many of them over the years. I worked on equipment that had EPROM firmware that had to be changed out to upgrade. We shipped the old ones off and they re-programed them for the next guy. I just wasn't familiar with the "EEPROM" term. Now I know. But this is off-topic. I don't know where one would find equipment for what STP162 needs to do.

This may be a long shot. But, in the back of my head (Way back after teaching high schoolers for 33 years) it seems that one of my charges had a piece of software that he booted his thinkpad with on a floppy from a CD that allowed him to clear the EEPROM. All I seem to remember is that the CD was black on both sides and he had gotten it from one of his friends dads. THe ThinkPad had no CD drive so he created a boot floopy from the CD.

Its late and I'm sorry that I forgot to add this. Some very high end stero equipment uses this same style eeprom to tattle on what made the system die. They can then pull the module at the service center and read it to see what parameters the stero was at when it bit the dust. So, if they can read them they sure must be able to write to and clear them. Sorry for two answers with out specfic references to solutions.

Hi, in general these are flashable when there is NO supervisor password on them. This is placed in an access protected sector of one of the blocks, in other words the VCC has been activated, so you can't boot this system from a CD or floppy to flash the PROM. That is why these are replaced. Was just looking for something easier. To not have to take them out AND do this with an in-system unit!---just a dream maybe.
