For all those people that write scripts offline, where's a good editor with syntax highlights and everything, oh yea, and free. So a decent free editor with syntax highlights is what I'm looking for, until I get some cash.

Thanks,

Thanks Guys, I'll try them both tomorrow, I got booked up today,

emacs? EMACS?!!!!!

Quick, quick -- somebody write me a script to red-flag all posts that (try to) portray emacs in a positive light. Mike

I have several free ones and UltraEdit and several other commercial ones and I still return to 'vi'. I find I write more quickly if I can keep my hands on the keyboard and don't have to keep chasing a mouse around it's pad.

I guess that makes me a dinasour and a minority of 1.

yeah, well maybe i just like programming in lisp, okay? emacs is programable in a fun language (on good days). spend enough time with it and you can get it to do almost anything. and even if i didn't want to play with lisp to enhance it, i'd say it has one of the most comprehensive archives of add-ons.
i also have to side with goBoating - editors that you can do everything without taking your hands off the keys (or even over to the arrow keys) make working easier.
the open perl ide has very little accessable manipulation of options on the part of a user (tab stops is the first that comes to my mind). i probly didn't play around enough with it's source code and other files, otherwise i'd be more pleased with it's performance (i do like it a little as an occasional break from emacs while in windows land).
[/rant] :p
one thing i also thought of, i remember a really good editor named Pe, but last i checked it was for money and only for BeOS. without paying (or cracking it), the only functionality removed is the ability to save. if you don't mind cutting and pasting occasionally (via the macro "alt-a, alt-c, ctrl-tab, alt-a, alt-v"), it works fine (okay, hey now, the plight of a starving student shouldn't be despised too much. i'll become part of this economy as soon as i get done with my four years). it is a really nice editor, capable of emulating emacs and vim and others. If you're looking for a great windows editor try EditPlus ( I've tried literally dozens of editors and it's the one I like best. Lots of features and VERY configurable. Tracy Dryden

minority of two, goBoating -- on UNIX I never touch anything else (especially not that nasty ewocs thing) Mike

On *nix I used an editor called JOE. It was pretty good, but didn't do syntax highlighting and that sort of thing. Still, since I used it thru a telnet connection, it worked quite well for the purpose, and was easier to use than vi or emacs.
