My edge router times out intermitently when I ping it from the LAN. I have checked it memory (using sho mem) and I can see that I am only using about 50%. When I ping from the local LAN i sometimes get up to 125 lost packects. I dont have the same problem when I ping from my PC to another PC on this LAN.

Have you replaced your cables that go from the switches or hubs to your router? Also you should look to see if the router Ethernet interface has any errors logged which would probably point to a problem with the physical layer cables. I would try replacing the cables and see what happens.

I have done this previously. When I do "sho int" there are no errors indicated

Have you looked into the switch where the router ethernet cable is connected to? Take a look at the switch, and look at the "show inter fa0/?" of the port where the router's ethernet cable is connected. Make sure both of these are configured for the right speed and duplex. You may also want to look at the bug tool kit, and see if there are any known issues with the version of IOS in place. Let us know how you are making out. One more thing, you mention that pinging the router interface from the LAN is intermitent, how is it if you ping a device on the LAN from the router's ethernet interface?

I have alreday checked the speed/ duplex on both and Have ensured that they are not on auto.

When I ping devices from the router unto the Lam all appears to be well.

Well you seem to have tried everything. I would also suggest pinging the router interface from the switch that is connected to it, see if you are getting the same ping response from when you are pinging it from the switch as you do from the PCs. Also try doing a trace route from a desktop to the router's interface, just to see that there's no routing loop or anything, and you should do this from the switch as well. What percentage would you say is your ping to the router interface is successful? Does some of the pings go through, and some don't, or is it alot of the ping don't go through. Also does the edge router work properly, in the sense of routing. Is the only issue right now is pinging the interface, or are there other issues?

The main Issue is that we seem to be having dropped packets on our VOIP circuit. It was in trying to Diagnose this that I discovered the pinging issue. But routing wise all is ok.
