My dir, pub and priv files are all locked at out in use by another program, I am willing to bet that it's because exchange server is still running.

How do I shut it down? I am not exactly sure how to get to the program.

Is it "Exchange Administrator"? In this program there is a "close" in the file menu, however it does nothing for me.
I do see the progress bar go from 0-100% really quick.. and then it sits.

After this I am still unable to copy these files.

I'm lost!

- you need to look at the bits that talk about online vs offline backups.

For offline backups, you simply stop the Exchange services. For online backups, you use the (patched since you installed Exchange) NTbackup, or a commercial backup program that includes an Exchange agent.
