echo in sound of used pc

A person need's help with his sound, it has a echo in the sound system. I have not seen the pc just thought I might help.

In the sound control is the microphone setting on? And does he have a microphone plugged in? Try mutting the sound for the microphone and checking that the speakers are in their proper port.

I had this problem with a couple of SB Live cards at home. Sort of sounds like a hollow metallic echo? Completely deleting the sound card drivers and re-installing them did not work for me. I had to do a repair install of my OS.
