ECC Memory - Power Supply

I have a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P based workstation. It has a gig of PC2100 memory, a 64mb vid card and two Athlon MP's.

The board has 4 memory slots. You can put standard memory in the first two slots but if you use ECC memory you can fill all 4 slots.

In BIOS there is an ECC Memory option that I turned on and then replaced the PC2100 with the proper ECC memory. Now the machine won't even post. I tried 1, 2 and 3 sticks of 1 Gb ECC buffered memory without success. I know ECC takes longer but I waited 10 minutes with no results.

I am wondering if the ECC is pushing my 400 watt power supply past the brink. Do I just need to get a 500 watt supply.

Are you POSITIVE that the memory you purchased is supported by the MB manufacturer? Have you tried booting without the ECC setting enabled in BIOS (should work)? Have you tried disabling ECC Chip Kill function in the BIOS if it exists?.

Well the first set of ECC memory I purchased I got by just running Crucial.com's memory configurator on the system and accepting the memory it picked.

The second set of ECC memory I manually picked off of 4allmemory.com. It is:

1GBMB, DDR PC2100, CL=2.5, ECC, Registered
128Meg x 72, 184 Pin DIMM, DDR266, 2.5v

I think that is the proper memory as per Gigabytes website:

I did try booting w/o the ECC enabled.

I'll look for that chip-kill option.

According to page 17 of your manual, only the following types of memory will work when using 1GB DIMMs.

256 Mbit(16Mx4x4 banks)
512 Mbit(16Mx8x4 banks)

You've got 128 Mbit, and your board can only support up to 512MB per DIMM of that type.

ok, the plot thickens...

this is what I got back from Gigabyte support:

If memory is the only parts you have changed, then memory is the issue. Here are links to compatible models of Kingston and Crucial memory. You may use there validated models as a reference or as your vendor to choose one with similar specs for you:

the crucial link is the same one I purchased earlier that did not work.

OK, check your BIOS settings again.

Try using these settings:
SDRAM ECC Setting - Checks only
Super Bypass Mode - Disabled
DDR SDRAM Timing - Auto

Also make sure you are filling the right DIMM slots: 0, 1, and 2 leaving 3 empty.
